(1) Introduction to the course and the guide book.
(2) Students pick up an assigned research topic (for now a cluster of keywords from which a topic for dissertation can be developed).
Sample clusters of keywords: (a) gene, meme, genetics, memetics; (b) text, textuality, intertextuality, textual criticism, texture/structure; (c) culture, culture/nature, nature/nurture, cultural studies, culturalogy; (d) ecology, ecosystem, ecocriticism, ecophilosophy, ecology as discourse; e) niche, habitus, colony, colonization as a biological phenomenon, colonization as a cultural phenomenon, colonialism as discourse.
(3) Consult Raymond Williams, _Keywords_ and Tony Bennett et ali, _New Keywords_. Reading Assignment 1: Sample entries from Williams and Bennett et ali will be assigned for discussion in Week 2.
(4) Write a three-page essay on the entries assigned for the first week,i.e., 'culture' and 'civilization'.
